RANCHI: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has attached assets worth Rs. 136.44 crore in connection with an alleged illegal coal mining and smuggling syndicate linked to Anup Majhi, alias Lala, according to newspaper reports.
The latest attachment reportedly includes two eco-tourism resorts in West Bengal, one in Purulia and another in Bankura, along with two properties in Kolkata. Funds held in bank accounts and investments linked to members of Majhi’s family have also reportedly come under scrutiny.
With the latest action, the total value of assets attached in the case has reached approximately Rs. 815.08 crore, according to the reports. The agency had previously attached assets worth Rs. 678.64 crore.
Alleged coal proceeds routed through companies
The ED’s investigation reportedly centres on allegations that coal extracted illegally was sold for cash to factories in West Bengal and that the proceeds were subsequently routed through companies and financial accounts to conceal their origin.
According to the reports, several companies were allegedly registered in the names of relatives, employees and associates, while Majhi was suspected of exercising actual control over them. The alleged network is also suspected of using accommodation entries and financial transactions to disguise the proceeds of illegal coal operations.
The reports further state that money allegedly generated through the operations was used to acquire properties and develop tourism-related businesses. The resorts in Purulia and Bankura are among the assets reportedly identified in the latest action.
Investigation into financial and administrative links
The case has also drawn attention to the alleged involvement of intermediaries and local administrative officials in facilitating the operations. These claims require corroboration through official records and should be distinguished from allegations formally established in court.
The investigation seeks to trace the alleged proceeds of crime, identify the individuals exercising control over the companies involved and establish the ownership and financial history of the attached properties.
The attachment of assets is a step in the legal process and does not, by itself, establish the guilt of the persons concerned. The allegations remain subject to the relevant judicial proceedings.
Questions over enforcement in the coal economy
The case highlights the challenges of detecting illegal coal extraction, tracking the movement of coal through industrial supply chains and tracing money allegedly generated through unlawful mining and trading.
For coal-producing regions, effective enforcement requires coordination between investigating agencies, mining authorities, local administrations and financial institutions. Establishing beneficial ownership of companies and tracing suspicious transactions are also central to identifying the ultimate beneficiaries of alleged proceeds of crime.
The precise status of the latest attachment, the properties covered by the order and any related court proceedings should be verified against official ED documents before publication.
