4th South Asian Athletics (SAAF) Senior Championship 2025

Jharkhand is set to welcome South Asia’s finest athletes as it hosts the 4th South Asian Athletics (SAAF) Senior Championship 2025 from October 24 to 26 at Birsa Munda Athletics Stadium, Ranchi. The championship will see participation from six South Asian countries, India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Maldives, and Sri Lanka bringing together sport, culture, and commerce under one roof.

In a grand ceremony on Friday, the logo, mascot, and official anthem of the championship were unveiled, providing a glimpse of how Jharkhand plans to project itself as a hub of sports, culture, and economic activity.

Culture and Sports in Harmony

The championship logo symbolises Jharkhand’s natural beauty, tribal art, and athletic spirit. Designed on the theme “The Land of Sports, Tribes, Culture and Nature,” it fuses lush greenery with Sohrai and Khovar tribal motifs, representing the state’s ecological and cultural richness.

The mascot, “Dalma,” inspired by Jharkhand’s state animal and the Dalma Hills, embodies strength, grace, and energy. Decorated with tribal tattoo motifs and dressed in white athletic gear, Dalma is a vivid representation of Jharkhand’s soul and sporting ethos.

The official anthem, composed in Nagpuri language, blends traditional instruments like mandarnagada, and bansuriwith contemporary music. It celebrates local heritage while conveying a message of unity, pride, and determination, reminding the world that champions can emerge from Jharkhand’s soil.

India’s Athletic Ambitions

The championship will feature over 300 athletes and 150 technical officials. India’s 81-member contingent will compete in 37 gold medal events, aiming to continue the country’s strong legacy in SAAF competitions. In 2008, India dominated the championship in Kochi with 57 medals, and this year, home advantage could further boost national performance.

Tourism, Business, and Economic Opportunities

Beyond the track, SAAF 2025 offers a boost to tourism and business in Jharkhand. With international athletes, officials, and media visiting, hotels, restaurants, and local transport are expected to see increased demand. Handicrafts, tribal art, and cultural exhibitions will gain visibility among visitors from across South Asia, creating opportunities for local artisans and entrepreneurs.

Officials also hope the event will position Jharkhand as a destination for sports tourism, highlighting scenic locations like Ranchi’s waterfalls, hillocks, and tribal heritage sites. Government initiatives aim to integrate cultural showcases, food festivals, and sports camps, making the championship a platform for economic, cultural, and youth engagement.

A Platform for South Asian Unity

The championship embodies South Asian cooperation and friendship, providing a space where sports transcend borders. It is a celebration of shared heritage, cultural dialogue, and athletic excellence. For Jharkhand, hosting SAAF 2025 is a chance to showcase its sports infrastructure, tribal identity, and business potential simultaneously.

As the countdown to October 24 begins, Ranchi prepares to welcome the region with open arms. From the beats of traditional drums to the roar of the stadium, from athletes’ energy to local entrepreneurship, the event promises to be a festival of sport, culture, tourism, and commerce, all anchored in the heart of Jharkhand.
