Tata Steel Gets World Steel ‘Sustainability Champion’ Tag for Ninth Year

Tata Steel has been recognised as a Steel Sustainability Champion 2026 by the World Steel Association (WorldSteel), marking the ninth consecutive year the company has received the honour.

The recognition reflects Tata Steel’s continued performance in sustainable steelmaking and its commitment to environmental and operational standards set by WorldSteel.

The Steel Sustainability Champions programme recognises member companies that demonstrate strong commitment to sustainability initiatives and measurable performance across key indicators.

Tata Steel is among only two companies globally to have received this recognition every year since the programme began in 2018.

T V Narendran, CEO and Managing Director of Tata Steel, said sustainability is embedded in the company’s operating model, including improving resource efficiency, adopting low-carbon technologies and creating long-term value for stakeholders and communities.

The company stated that its sustainability efforts include:

  • Improving material and resource efficiency
  • Reducing emissions and carbon footprint
  • Investing in new technologies and process innovation
  • Strengthening environmental management systems
  • Enhancing safety performance and employee training

As part of the selection process, companies are required to meet strict criteria, including signing the WorldSteel Sustainability Charter and demonstrating performance across key sustainability indicators.

Tata Steel also participates in WorldSteel’s climate action initiatives and submits Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) data under global data collection programmes.

The company said it continues to focus on reducing the carbon footprint of its products and processes while supporting the transition of the global steel industry toward a low-carbon future.
