TSAF Rowing Academy Wins Back-to-Back Medals at National Indoor Championship
Tata Steel Adventure Foundation (TSAF) Rowing Academy has secured two bronze medals at the National Indoor Rowing Championship 2026 in Cuttack, marking its second consecutive podium finish and reinforcing its emergence in Indian rowing.
The achievement comes a day after the academy won its first-ever national medal in rowing, indicating a rapid rise in performance. TSAF has been focusing on identifying and training athletes from rural Jharkhand, particularly around Jamshedpur, with an emphasis on structured coaching and exposure.
The academy is part of Tata Steel’s broader sports development ecosystem, which has historically supported disciplines beyond mainstream sports.
Sukhlal Tudu won bronze in the U-23 Lightweight Men’s Individual category, while Sulekha Murmu secured bronze in the Lightweight Women’s Individual category at the championship being held in Cuttack.
Both athletes belong to the Dimna rural belt near Jamshedpur, underlining the role of grassroots scouting in the academy’s talent pipeline.
The medals come within 24 hours of TSAF’s first national-level podium finish in rowing, marking a significant milestone in the academy’s journey.
The back-to-back medals signal the emergence of Jharkhand as a new talent base in niche sports like rowing, traditionally dominated by coastal and institutional centres.
For local communities, especially in rural areas, such achievements can expand access to sports as a pathway for mobility and recognition. It also strengthens the case for greater investment in non-mainstream sports infrastructure in the state.
TSAF’s early success in rowing reflects a larger shift where corporate-backed grassroots programmes are beginning to deliver results beyond their traditional focus areas.
The key question is whether this momentum can be sustained through institutional support, infrastructure expansion, and long-term athlete development, turning isolated wins into a consistent sporting ecosystem for Jharkhand.
