RANCHI: Jharkhand is bracing for heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds under the influence of Cyclone Arnab, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting adverse weather across the state over the next few days.
An orange alert has been issued for October 28 and 29, when wind speeds could reach 50–60 kmph in affected areas. Heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. The IMD’s latest warning also forecasts heavy rain in Jharkhand on October 30.
The developing weather system has prompted district administrations and government departments to strengthen preparedness, particularly for possible waterlogging, damage to vulnerable structures and disruptions to electricity supply.
District administration steps up preparedness
According to reports published on Tuesday, Ranchi district administration has directed departments concerned to remain alert from October 28 to 30 and maintain coordination to respond to weather-related emergencies.
Officials have been asked to monitor vulnerable locations, including areas prone to waterlogging, drains and low-lying settlements. Urban local bodies have also been instructed to prepare for the possible impact of heavy rainfall.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is expected to monitor highway conditions and arrange for the removal of fallen trees or other obstructions where necessary.
The electricity department has activated its control room for round-the-clock monitoring, according to the published report. Officials are expected to remain available to address complaints and respond to damage caused by strong winds, lightning or falling trees.
Schools may face disruption
The possibility of closing schools on October 28 and 29 has also been raised amid concerns over heavy rain and strong winds. However, no final closure order is confirmed in the material available for this report. Parents and students should follow official announcements from the district administration and education department.
What the forecast says
The weather warning indicates that conditions may deteriorate from October 27, with thunderstorms and gusty winds expected in parts of Jharkhand. The risk is forecast to increase on October 28 and 29, when stronger winds and isolated heavy rainfall are likely.
The IMD has also forecast heavy rain on October 30, suggesting that the weather impact may continue beyond the two-day orange-alert period. The intensity and distribution of rainfall may vary between districts.
Cyclone Arnab is expected to affect the eastern coast, while its associated weather system is likely to influence Jharkhand through rain, thunderstorms and strong winds. The IMD continues to issue updates as the system develops.
Residents have been advised to follow official weather bulletins, avoid taking shelter under trees during thunderstorms and keep away from damaged electrical wires. Loose roofing materials and outdoor objects should be secured ahead of strong winds.
The administration’s preparedness over the coming days will be crucial to reducing disruption to transport, electricity supply and daily life, particularly in vulnerable urban and rural areas.
