RANCHI: Seeking to position Jharkhand as a hub for healthcare innovation, Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Monday launched the “District Sandbox” initiative, a platform designed to test and evaluate new medical technologies in real-world public health settings before their wider deployment.
The initiative was unveiled at the MedTech Innovation Day programme organised by the Bharatiya Vikas Trust (BVT) in collaboration with the PHIA Foundation in Ranchi.
Officials said the District Sandbox framework will enable innovators, startups and researchers to pilot healthcare technologies under actual field conditions, helping assess their effectiveness and scalability, particularly in rural, tribal and underserved regions.
Addressing the gathering, Soren said technology-driven solutions would play a decisive role in strengthening healthcare delivery in geographically challenging states such as Jharkhand.
“Health remains one of the biggest challenges globally, and technology and innovation can significantly improve access to services in remote and tribal areas,” he said, adding that artificial intelligence, bio-engineering and real-time data would increasingly shape future healthcare systems.
The chief minister assured innovators and startups of government support in translating promising technologies into practical public-health solutions. During the event, he also reviewed a portable digital X-ray machine developed by alumni of the Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad.
According to organisers, the District Sandbox initiative is intended to strengthen Jharkhand’s health innovation ecosystem by creating a structured pathway for testing, validating and scaling emerging healthcare technologies. The programme is expected to encourage collaboration among government agencies, researchers, healthcare institutions and development partners.
Health Minister Dr Irfan Ansari said the state had witnessed significant expansion in healthcare infrastructure in recent years, citing growth in medical colleges, MBBS and postgraduate seats, and recruitment of doctors.
He said the government was exploring new models to improve the availability of specialist doctors in rural areas and was also examining the wider use of AI-based healthcare services. The minister announced plans to establish 745 “Abua Medical Stores” across the state to improve access to medicines.
The programme featured panel discussions on developing MedTech solutions for public health systems and on accelerating adoption of innovations through collaboration among government, healthcare institutions, innovators and development organisations.
PHIA Foundation Executive Director Johnson Topno said the initiative would provide an opportunity to test and refine solutions aligned with Jharkhand’s public health priorities while enabling faster adoption of impactful innovations.
