Ranchi is set to emerge as a major sports hub with the state government moving forward on two fronts: upgrading the iconic Mega Sports Complex at Hotwar and establishing a dedicated Sports University in the capital.
At a high-level meeting held at the Jharkhand Secretariat on Wednesday, Chief Minister Hemant Soren directed officials to expedite all necessary procedures for setting up the university. He said the institution would serve as a platform to nurture talent and shape the careers of young athletes from Jharkhand and across India.
“The Sports University will provide a robust platform to nurture talent and advance the careers of our athletes,” Soren said, adding that Jharkhand must aim for international standards in sports infrastructure.
The meeting was attended by Tourism, Art-Culture, Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Sudivya Kumar, Chief Secretary Avinash Kumar, senior officials of the Sports Department, Jharkhand State Building Construction Corporation (JSBCC), Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), and representatives of specialized agencies.
Mega Sports Complex: A Distinct Identity
The Chief Minister highlighted the significance of the Mega Sports Complex, which has already earned Jharkhand recognition at the national and international level. Unlike most facilities in India, the Hotwar complex houses multiple stadiums within one campus, enabling it to host large-scale competitions.
Over the years, it has successfully staged national championships and international events, giving local athletes exposure to high-quality competition. “The complex is active throughout the year, hosting competitions and daily practice sessions. All necessary resources and facilities must be in place to ensure optimal utilization,” Soren said.
Modernization and Opportunities
Officials have been asked to identify gaps in the existing stadiums and ensure that modernization aligns with global benchmarks. The government plans to bring in specialized agencies to implement advanced technologies and practices in the upgradation process.
The proposed overhaul is expected to strengthen Jharkhand’s reputation as a premier sports destination while creating opportunities in related sectors. Improved infrastructure could attract investment, boost tourism, and generate employment alongside empowering athletes.
Athletes at the Center
Jharkhand has produced a steady stream of sports talent, particularly in disciplines like hockey, archery, and athletics. Many of these athletes trained at the Hotwar complex before making their mark nationally and internationally. With the addition of a Sports University, the state hopes to provide structured education, professional coaching, and scientific training facilities that can take its athletes to the next level.
A Strategic Push for Sporting Excellence
The government’s plan reflects a broader vision of placing Jharkhand on the global sporting map. By combining infrastructure upgrades with institutional support, the state aims to not only nurture champions but also transform sports into a driver of development.
As groundwork begins on both the Sports University and the upgradation of the Mega Sports Complex, Jharkhand is positioning itself for a new era of sporting excellence that could inspire future generations and redefine the state’s role in India’s athletic landscape.
