The Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad, is gearing up for a historic milestone, its centenary celebration on 9 December 2025. Industrialist Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, will attend the ceremony as the chief guest, lending corporate gravitas to one of Jharkhand’s proudest academic institutions.

Established on 9 December 1926 by then Viceroy Lord Irwin, IIT (ISM) has grown from a mining school under British India to a globally recognized technology university. As it turns 100, the institute stands as a symbol of Jharkhand’s evolution from a mineral-driven economy to a hub of technology, research, and innovation.

Industry and Academia: A Strategic Convergence

Adani’s presence at the centenary event is being viewed as more than ceremonial. The Adani Group’s growing footprint in coal, logistics, and renewable energy has close synergies with IIT (ISM)’s research expertise in mining and energy technology.

Industry observers suggest the visit could pave the way for new collaborations between the institute and the Adani Group in sustainable mining, energy efficiency, and skill development, strengthening the industry-academia bridge that Jharkhand needs.

IIT (ISM) reflects the larger story of Jharkhand’s transformation. What began as a mining school in the coal belt has become a multi-disciplinary hub producing engineers, data scientists, and innovators shaping India’s industrial sectors. The institute’s alumni have led projects across mining, petroleum, IT, and clean energy, sectors vital to both Jharkhand and India’s growth.

This centenary celebration is not just an academic milestone; it’s a statement about how Jharkhand’s knowledge institutions are powering the nation’s economy.

Alumni Drive Rs. 100-Crore Fund for Campus Growth

The alumni network, spread across the world, is rallying behind a Rs. 100-crore fundraising campaign to support infrastructure development, research, and scholarships.

The IIT (ISM) Alumni Association of North America (ISMAANA) is leading the effort, offering naming rights for sections of the new Green Centenary Building to major donors. The initiative reflects a strong alumni-institution bond and sets a benchmark for self-sustaining higher education models in India.

A Green Landmark for the Next Century

At the heart of the celebration is the upcoming Green Centenary Building, designed to blend sustainability with advanced learning infrastructure.

The facility will feature a 2,500-seat auditorium, smart classrooms for over 1,200 students, and two modern conference halls. With energy-efficient systems and green design, the building represents the institute’s commitment to environmental responsibility and technological excellence.

As part of campus upgrades, IIT (ISM) is also improving its roads, gardens, and student facilities, turning the Dhanbad campus into a model for eco-friendly higher education.

A Century in Coin: National Recognition for Jharkhand’s Pride

In a fitting tribute, a Rs. 100 commemorative coin will be issued to mark IIT (ISM)’s 100-year journey. The coin will symbolize the institute’s century-long contribution to India’s industrial and scientific development.

Only a handful of academic institutions in India have received this honor, placing IIT (ISM) among the country’s most respected educational legacies.

Adani’s Visit and Jharkhand’s Industrial Significance

Adani’s attendance is being seen in a broader context of Jharkhand’s growing industrial relevance. The state’s mineral resources, energy projects, and skilled workforce make it an attractive destination for new investments. The Adani Group’s participation in such a milestone event highlights Jharkhand’s emerging position on the national industrial map.

For the business community, the visit underlines how corporate leaders are now engaging directly with academic ecosystems to strengthen talent pipelines and foster innovation.

Students and Innovation at the Core

Adding a creative touch to the event, Mohit Gupta, a final-year Petroleum Engineering student, designed the official centenary logo. His design, chosen from several submissions, captures the spirit of progress and innovation that defines IIT (ISM).
It’s a reminder that the future of the institute lies in the hands of students who blend technical knowledge with creative thinking, the same spirit that powered IIT (ISM)’s first century.

Jharkhand’s Knowledge Capital Looks Ahead

As IIT (ISM) steps into its next century, its goals extend beyond academics. It aims to expand international collaborations, foster startups, and strengthen ties with industries shaping India’s green and digital transition.

The centenary celebration, combining tradition and technology, sends a clear message –  Jharkhand is no longer just a mining state; it’s an emerging knowledge capital of eastern India.

With Gautam Adani gracing the occasion and a Rs. 100 coin symbolizing its journey, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad’s centenary will mark not just a milestone in education, but a defining moment for Jharkhand’s industrial and academic identity.
