The Government of India’s Government e-Marketplace (GeM) will organise a one-day ‘GeM Excellence Event’ in Ranchi on January 19 with the objective of strengthening and streamlining public procurement across Jharkhand through digital means.

The event, to be held in Dhurwa, is aimed at providing hands-on and practical exposure to Jharkhand government departments, buyer organisations and local sellers on the latest features, workflows and operational processes available on the GeM platform. Officials said the programme is part of GeM’s broader outreach to enhance adoption and effective utilisation of the portal at the state level.

GeM serves as India’s unified digital public procurement platform, enabling central and state governments, public sector undertakings, autonomous bodies and other government institutions to procure goods and services in a transparent and efficient manner. The platform has been positioned as a key tool to promote competition, reduce procurement time and costs, and ensure wider participation, including that of local vendors and MSMEs.

During the Ranchi event, special focus will be placed on procurement of services, including new features and updated workflows introduced on the platform. Dedicated sessions will be organised for government buyers from Jharkhand to explain, in simple terms, the end-to-end process for purchasing goods and services through GeM. A separate session will also be held to clarify rules, compliance requirements and procedures related to manpower hiring via the platform.

Senior officials, including Union Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal, GeM Chief Executive Officer Mihir Kumar and senior representatives of the Jharkhand government, are expected to address the gathering. They will share insights on the evolving digital procurement ecosystem, policy perspectives and the role of GeM in improving governance outcomes.

As part of the programme, three Jharkhand government departments with the highest procurement volumes through GeM will be recognised. In addition, select vendors demonstrating outstanding performance on the platform will be felicitated, with the aim of encouraging best practices and greater participation.

A dedicated session for sellers from Jharkhand will also be conducted, where the GeM team will guide participants on increasing their engagement in government procurement, understanding platform procedures, addressing common challenges and resolving operational queries.

Officials said the GeM Excellence Event would provide a significant opportunity for both buyers and sellers in Jharkhand to better understand the platform’s capabilities and recent enhancements. The initiative is expected to contribute to making public procurement in the state simpler, more transparent and outcome-oriented, while also opening up greater opportunities for local enterprises to participate in government purchasing.
