Ranchi Storm School Closure Alert

RANCHI: The Ranchi district administration has suspended classroom teaching for students from Kindergarten (KG) to Class 12 in all government, government-aided and private schools on October 28 and 29 in view of an orange weather alert issued for the district amid the forecast of heavy rainfall and strong winds associated with Cyclone Arnab.

The order, issued by the district administration on Tuesday, covers all categories of government and government-aided schools, including minority institutions, as well as private schools. It has been issued under Section 34 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005.

Schools that have examinations scheduled in advance may decide whether to conduct them. However, their managements must inform the District Education Officer or the District Superintendent of Education’s office about their decision.

Teachers of government, government-aided and private schools have been directed to remain present on the premises on October 28 and 29 to carry out non-academic work. Attendance in government and government-aided schools must also be recorded on the e-Vidyavahini platform.

According to the district administration, the India Meteorological Department’s forecast indicates the possibility of heavy rainfall and strong winds in Ranchi. The administration has directed the departments concerned to remain vigilant and ensure necessary preparedness from October 28 to 30.

The administration has warned of possible waterlogging in low-lying areas and on roads, damage to weak structures, rising water levels in rivers and drains, and possible damage to standing crops due to water accumulation in fields.

Officials from disaster management, revenue, municipal administration, police, health, electricity and water resources departments have been directed to monitor vulnerable areas and take necessary precautions. Urban local bodies have been asked to ensure proper drainage and keep roads and drains clear.

Residents, particularly those living in low-lying areas and vulnerable houses, have been advised to remain alert, avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from swollen rivers, drains and waterlogged roads. People have also been cautioned against taking shelter under trees or near electric poles during thunderstorms.

The district administration said it was monitoring the situation and would issue further instructions as required.
