UPI at Toll Plazas

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has taken a significant step to promote digital payments at National Highway toll plazas across Jharkhand. From November 15, 2025, vehicles without a valid FASTag paying toll in cash will be charged double the normal fee, while those opting for Unified Payment Interface (UPI) will pay only 1.25 times the standard rate.

For instance, a toll of Rs. 100 will now cost Rs. 200 in cash but only Rs. 125 via UPI, creating a strong incentive for digital transactions. The move aligns with the government’s Digital India initiative, aiming to reduce cash transactions, increase transparency, and improve commuter convenience.

Digital Payment Push in Jharkhand
Jharkhand, with its mix of urban highways and rural routes, stands to benefit significantly from the push toward digital toll collection. Experts believe this will streamline operations, reduce queue times, and make commuting smoother, especially on busy stretches like Ranchi–Ramgarh, Jamshedpur–Gumla, and Hazaribag–Bokaro.

FASTag Adoption and Awareness
While FASTag adoption has been growing, many vehicles in Jharkhand still rely on cash. Toll authorities say awareness campaigns and on-site FASTag issuance are helping bridge the gap. Additionally, the annual FASTag pass, introduced this Independence Day for private vehicles at ₹3,000, offers 200 toll journeys or a year’s validity, whichever comes first. Once the limit is reached, the pass automatically switches to the standard pay-per-trip mode.

Impact on Commuters and Commercial Transport
Daily commuters and small transport operators are already assessing the cost implications. For private cars and jeeps, the UPI discount offers immediate savings, while doubling cash payments may encourage a shift to digital or FASTag adoption. Commercial vehicle operators note that predictable toll payments via UPI will simplify budgeting for long-haul trips across Jharkhand.

Technology Meets Transparency
The amendment is also expected to curb cash-handling issues at toll plazas. “Digital payments make the process faster and more transparent,” said a toll plaza manager on Ranchi-Gumla Highway. Reduced congestion at plazas could also improve safety and decrease travel delays.

Road Safety and Congestion Benefits
Authorities note that UPI and FASTag adoption can significantly reduce the time vehicles spend at toll gates. This is expected to lower congestion, particularly during festive or peak travel periods.

Economic Implications
For logistics and transport businesses in Jharkhand, the policy may encourage formal banking channels and reduce unaccounted cash flows. Smaller businesses could see immediate benefits by switching to UPI for routine toll payments.

Policy and Public Response
The public reaction in Jharkhand is mixed. Frequent highway users welcome the digital payment incentives, while some rural drivers remain wary due to limited familiarity with UPI apps. Experts stress that outreach and support at toll plazas will be key to successful adoption.

With cashless travel incentivized and toll collection made more transparent, Jharkhand’s highways are poised for a smoother, safer, and more efficient commuting experience. The new rules will come into effect from November 15, 2025, applying to all National Highway toll plazas across Jharkhand.
