The Jharkhand government has approved a Rs. 48.72 crore plan to modernize Ranchi’s three major bus terminals, ITI Bus Stand, Government Bus Depot, and Birsa Munda Bus Terminal (Khadgarha). The project aims to bring the city’s transport hubs up to national standards with improved infrastructure, better passenger facilities, and safer, cleaner surroundings.

Chief Minister Hemant Soren directed officials to accelerate urban development projects in the capital. Acting on his instruction, Urban Development and Housing Minister Sudivya Kumar sanctioned Rs. 48.72 crore for the three terminals. Of this, Rs. 24.77 crore is allocated for ITI Bus Stand, Rs. 20.19 crore for Government Bus Depot, and Rs. 3.76 crore for Birsa Munda Terminal.

The Jharkhand Urban Infrastructure Development Company (JUDCO) has been tasked with issuing tenders and starting work promptly. Urban Development Principal Secretary Sunil Kumar will oversee the implementation.

ITI Bus Stand to Offer Modern Facilities

Spread over three acres, the ITI Bus Stand will feature a terminal building with 2,330 square metres on the ground floor and 880 square metres on the first floor. The design includes a driver’s canteen, maintenance shed, guard room, waiting lounge, parking for cars, autos, and e-rickshaws, ticket counters, and dormitory space. The first floor will have a restaurant, administrative office, locker-equipped guest rooms, and landscaped areas. The terminal is expected to handle 416 buses daily.

Government Bus Depot to Be Rebuilt

The Government Bus Depot, built between 1962 and 1970, is in poor condition. It will be rebuilt according to Indian Roads Congress standards at a cost of Rs. 20.19 crore. The new complex will have 1,771 square metres on the ground floor and 845 square metres on the first floor. Facilities include maintenance bays, dormitories, waiting halls, food kiosks, covered bus bays, and car and auto stands. Eight bus bays will allow operation of 512 buses daily.

Birsa Munda Bus Terminal to Be Renovated

The Birsa Munda Bus Terminal at Khadgarha will be renovated with a budget of Rs. 3.76 crore while preserving its current structure across 11.6 acres. Plans include 31 bus bays, parking for 89 buses and 70 cars, smart sheds, a 50-bed dormitory, restrooms, bathing facilities, guest rooms, high-mast lighting, boundary walls, and measures for women’s safety. Landscaping and beautification will also be done.

Urban Mobility and Smart Infrastructure

Officials said the redevelopment is part of a broader plan to modernize urban transport and improve passenger experience under the state’s urban development framework. The upgraded terminals are expected to reduce congestion, enhance hygiene, and improve commuter safety.

By meeting national design and safety benchmarks, these terminals will serve as models for other cities in Jharkhand. They are designed to be accessible for women, children, and the elderly.

Economic and Employment Benefits

The projects will generate employment during construction and provide long-term opportunities for vendors, transport operators, and service providers. Local contractors and small businesses will benefit from the redevelopment. Officials note that organized facilities and structured parking will support the local economy while improving public convenience.

Ranchi Moves Toward Modern Public Transport

Once completed, the upgraded bus terminals will transform Ranchi’s public transport landscape. Commuters will benefit from safer, cleaner, and better-organized spaces, while the city moves closer to national infrastructure standards. The projects reflect the state government’s focus on sustainable and inclusive urban development.
