Green Steel Commitment from Tata Steel at Davos

On the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting in Davos, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren held a high-level meeting with the senior leadership of Tata Steel, resulting in a major investment commitment for the state.

Tata Steel reaffirmed its plan to invest Rs. 11,000 crore in Jharkhand under New Age Green Steel Technology through a Letter of Intent and Cooperation Agreement. The proposed investment includes Rs. 7,000 crore for Hirsana Easy and Melt Technology, Rs. 1,500 crore for the Combi Mill project, and Rs. 2,600 crore for Tinplate expansion. The projects will deploy environmentally sustainable green steel technologies, drawing on advanced innovations from the Netherlands and Germany.

The Chief Minister underlined that Jharkhand’s industrial strategy is focused on sustainability, clean technology, and employment generation. He said the partnership with Tata Steel would strengthen the state’s industrial base, support India’s climate commitments, and position Jharkhand as a leader in green industrial transformation.

During the meetings, Hitachi presented proposals related to power and high-level grid infrastructure, while Tech Mahindra discussed investments in advanced facilities and information technology.

WEF Recognition and Sweden Collaboration

Chief Minister Hemant Soren was honoured with a White Badge by the World Economic Forum, along with a formal Letter of Cooperation. The partnership aligns with WEF’s Centres of Excellence focusing on Critical Minerals and New Energy, Climate Action and Biodiversity, and Just Energy Transition. Officials noted that Jharkhand’s Vision 2050 aligns closely with WEF’s framework for inclusive and sustainable societies.

Building on the outcomes of Jharkhand’s official visit to Sweden last year, Sweden has expressed interest in collaborating on Urban Transport projects. A Sweden–India Roundtable is proposed for April to explore concrete investment opportunities. The Chief Minister also met Swedish companies that had engaged with Jharkhand during the earlier visit, in coordination with the Sweden India Business Council.

Women Political Leadership Initiative

Representatives from the Women Political Leaders Forum expressed interest in partnering with the Jharkhand government to strengthen women’s political leadership, particularly among marginalized communities. Discussions included proposals for setting up an India Chapter and a non-partisan platform bringing together women representatives from across political parties for dialogue, training, and collaboration.

The Chief Minister was joined in the meetings by Tata Steel MD and CEO T.V. Narendran, Cecilia Oldne of the Sweden India Business Council, Silvana Koch-Mehrin of the Women Political Leaders Forum, Viraj Mehta of the World Economic Forum, Bharat Kaushal of Hitachi, and Sahil Dhawan of Tech Mahindra.
