RANCHI, March 14: A three-day training programme for officials involved in the first phase of Census 2027 was conducted in Ranchi to prepare for house listing and housing enumeration, officials said.

The training programme was organised at the Ranchi Collectorate building from March 12 to March 14 as part of preparations for the nationwide census exercise. Officials from different departments and blocks participated in the sessions.

According to the district administration, the training focused on the procedures and operational aspects of the first phase of the census, which involves house listing and housing census activities.

Deputy Commissioner of Ranchi and Principal Census Officer Manjunath Bhajantri inaugurated the programme. He said census data plays an important role in the formulation of development policies and government programmes.

Officials said the training sessions included detailed discussions on various stages of Census 2027, the methodology of data collection, and the use of digital tools designed for the exercise.

Participants were trained to use the House Listing Operation mobile application and the CMMS web portal for data entry, real-time uploads, verification and secure data management.

According to the administration, Census 2027 will be the first fully digital census in India, with data collection carried out through tablet or mobile-based applications. The process will also include a self-enumeration facility, allowing citizens to submit their details online.

Officials said the use of digital tools is intended to improve accuracy, speed and transparency in data collection during the census process.

The training was conducted by officials from the Census Directorate in Ranchi, including Deputy Director Keshya Nayak R. and district nodal officer Sanjeev Kumar Manjhi, who provided practical demonstrations of the digital platforms.

According to the administration, the census will be conducted in two phases.

The first phase, which includes house listing and housing census, will be carried out between April and September 2026during a 30-day period determined by each state.

The second phase, involving population enumeration, will take place in February 2027, with the reference date set as March 1, 2027.

Officials said the trained officers will now conduct similar field-level activities in their respective areas to ensure smooth implementation of the census operations.
