A delegation from the Government of Jharkhand, led by Urban Development and Housing Minister Sudivya Kumar, undertook a series of official engagements in Coventry, United Kingdom, to study global best practices in sustainable urban development, zero-emission city management, and future-ready mobility systems.
During the visit, the delegation held detailed discussions with Coventry City Council and Coventry University to understand Coventry’s zero-emission city framework, innovative governance models, and the role of academia–government collaboration in urban transformation. The interactions focused on policy integration, technology adoption, and citizen-centric urban planning aimed at building sustainable and inclusive cities.
As part of the study tour, the delegation visited the Coventry city bus depot to examine electric vehicle-based public transport systems. Officials were briefed on EV technologies, depot operations, fleet management, and large-scale zero-emission mobility solutions designed for urban environments.
Coventry City Council officials also made detailed presentations on innovation in urban mobility, future transportation systems, integrated city planning, and the creation of inclusive and vibrant public spaces. A key highlight of the discussions was the Coventry Very Light Rail (VLR) system, an affordable and low-carbon urban rail solution designed to minimize construction disruption while prioritizing people-centric mobility.
Speaking on the visit, Minister Sudivya Kumar said Coventry’s integrated approach to clean mobility, urban innovation, and public space design offers valuable lessons for Jharkhand. He noted that these global learnings would help the state shape clean, smart, and future-ready cities through sustainable transport systems, improved urban planning, and enhanced public spaces.
The Coventry engagements mark a significant step in Jharkhand’s efforts to adopt international best practices in climate-responsive urban development and modern city management.
